Cullen sets a brisk pace on their way back to Skyhold. He's been away long enough; he's ready to relieve Briony; he's ready to go about receiving full intelligence reports from Leliana instead of the truncated, heavily coded ones he receives in the field.
He is also ready to personally see to the laundering of his coat.
And Cullen is also ready to take at least half a day, and preferably more, to revel in solid walls and doors that lock.
As they ride through the sally port, Cullen glances over at Alistair. "I'll need to see Briony, and then I'll likely be called to the war room -- you're going to see Kieran?"

For a few more beats, he stays quiet.
Then, half-mumbled: "Didn't plan for that to come out that way."

"Your bite's much worse than your bark, I'm afraid."
no subject
"I didn't expect it to be that difficult," he goes on, after another short pause. "Not really having somewhere we could go, while we were in the Basin."
Not having a reprieve here and there. Not like at Skyhold.

His turn, now, to start rubbing the back of Alistair's neck.
"Lot to be proud of, there."

He's finally hit a full, bright grin.

"Good thing someone had the foresight to bring some wine and pie up here, then."

He strokes Alistair's hand with his thumb.
"Turn yourself into a limpet to leech off my breakfast. Clever."
no subject
"Is it going to work?"

There's not much space left between them, but Alistair does his damnedest to snuggle closer anyway.
"I ought to practice now so I'm in fine form by morning."

Cullen disentangles their fingers in order to bring both arms tight around Alistair.

He tips his head, the better to nuzzle the underside of Cullen's jaw.
"I can be a generous and fair limpet."

Just as lightly, he kisses Cullen's neck.
"Brilliant, Commander."

"You know what I ought to do sometime," he says, before trailing another soft line of kisses along Cullen's jaw. "Ask them to make you a batch of shortbread sandwiches with jam in the middle. For a special occasion."
no subject
"Not every day?" Plaintive.
no subject
"Bit like our neighbor's wine, isn't it." No less gentle, he nips at Cullen's earlobe. "We have to have regular shortbread sometimes so we can appreciate the jam and shortbread better."
