Cullen sets a brisk pace on their way back to Skyhold. He's been away long enough; he's ready to relieve Briony; he's ready to go about receiving full intelligence reports from Leliana instead of the truncated, heavily coded ones he receives in the field.
He is also ready to personally see to the laundering of his coat.
And Cullen is also ready to take at least half a day, and preferably more, to revel in solid walls and doors that lock.
As they ride through the sally port, Cullen glances over at Alistair. "I'll need to see Briony, and then I'll likely be called to the war room -- you're going to see Kieran?"

Alistair starts to snicker.
"We should celebrate with jam and shortbread."

"Did I not just warn you of the agony of putting on trousers?"

Whispered in his ear: "You'll help me come up with something good, I trust?"
no subject
"I've missed the biography of Kordillus Drakon."
no subject
"Aaaaand it's over," he declares. (Between snickers, it must be noted.) He lets go of Cullen, flopping to the side. "The moment's passed. Ruined. Gone forever."
no subject
"The wonder isn't that the thrill is gone," he remarks. "It's that it was ever there in the first place."
no subject
"Give it some time, I'm sure it'll return," he says.

Try 'stultifying.'

He kisses Cullen's fingertips.

He ought, he thinks, to ask what else Alistair needs. (What Cullen needs is time to rest.) But maybe he can be -- a little selfish, a little while longer. Instead, he smooths his thumb over Alistair's chest, and doesn't say anything.
no subject
"All right?" he asks quietly after a moment.

His smile's gone smaller, but no less warm. He keeps their fingers linked; squeezes Cullen's hand, lightly, before rolling onto his side to face him.
no subject
Quietly, he asks, "What do you need?"
no subject
A moment's pause.
Hopeful -- and more hesitant than he realizes -- "If we could make up for some of the time we didn't get in the Basin...I'd like that. If you could -- "
(The color in his cheeks is higher than he realizes, too. It's not like he's asking for anything scandalous; rather the opposite. It's the asking that's more difficult than he anticipated.)
"Take care of me?"
no subject
Soft, and deliberate:
"At your order."
He disentangles their hands so he can push Alistair's shoulder in the direction of the mattress.

But if they're letting themselves be selfish with one another tonight -- if Cullen has promised to be here in full --
Alistair exhales a shaky sigh as he lets himself be pushed flush against the bed. He cups Cullen's face; draws him down into a long kiss.
no subject
"Look at you." Softly. "Too handsome."

The instinct to deflect is still there -- twist it into a joke, turn it around into complimenting Cullen -- but he doesn't give in.
